An increase in major auto theft in Naples

NAPLES, Fla .– A simple reminder to lock your car doors and secure your valuables after the Naples Police Department sees an increase in incidents of auto theft.

The Naples Police Department reported that nine of the fifteen crime reports took place in the past four months. Four of the incidents occurred in December.

“Lock your car. Don’t leave anything in there, ”said Meredith Musick, a resident of Naples.

Leaving items in your car like car keys is exactly how the Naples Police Department said cars were stolen. Police officials say all cases involve an unlocked car with a key fob inside.

Meredith Musick, a resident of Naples, said she accidentally forgot to lock her car doors.

“For my part, I never used to lock my car and now I try to remember to always lock my car,” she said.

Although the overall number of major auto thefts and auto break-ins declined in 2021, Musick said she is looking to make a conscious effort to protect her property.

“If there’s something in my car I’ll make sure it’s not visible to the public,” she said.

She said she felt safe overall.

The Naples Police Department has said that if you have been the victim of a burglary or car theft in Naples, contact the Criminal Investigations Division of the Naples Police Department at (239) 213-4822.
