A new documentary exploring the history of Grand Theft Auto has revealed that the creator of Super Mario has already visited Dundee.
Shigeru Miyamoto, a Japanese game designer considered the father of modern gaming, visited City of Discovery’s DMA Design in the early ’90s to see how a new Nintendo project was progressing.
Miyamoto is credited as the creator of some of the world’s best-known game series including Super Mario, Donkey Kong, and The Legend of Zelda.
The astonishing factoid was discovered by the YouTube documentary channel Noclip, which released a new video on the history of GTA – created by DMA before changing its name to Rockstar North.
Mike Dailly, who designed GTA with Lemmings, told reporter Danny O’Dwyer that Miyamoto visited DMA to monitor the progress of Kid Kirby – a game starring Nintendo character Kirby that was never released.
He said, “I did the SNES [Super Nintendo Entertainment System] version of Lemmings 2, but we have also started to generate interest from Nintendo.
“We also had Miyamoto in the office. “
When asked what it was like to have the modern father of the game in Dundee, Mike added: “I didn’t really know who he was back then.

“In the early ’90s, he wasn’t the big name everyone knows about him later on.
“He was just … there’s a guy coming in trying to wear something neat, he’ll be standing behind you a little bit, that’s kind of it.”
Noclip’s feature-length documentary, The History of Grand Theft Auto, Lemmings & DMA Design, was released earlier today.
He sees a number of original developers from The Dundee Company telling the story of DMA and its hit games.
The video pays close attention to the series’ origins in Dundee, detailing how its status as a post-industrial city producing ZX Spectrum computers at the Timex factory inspired its future as a game development hub.
Closing the documentary, Danny said, “The city of Dundee has become one of the most influential cities in game development.”
Since its inception in Dundee in the 1990s, GTA has grown into one of the biggest gaming franchises in the world.
The most recent entry in the series, Grand Theft Auto V, has sold over 155 million copies worldwide.
