Leesburg couple extradited to New Mexico for stealing car

A Leesburg woman who is being extradited with her husband to New Mexico is also facing drug charges in Lake County after deputies found methamphetamine in her pocket.

Lorie Marie Duke, 44, of 1414 N. Lake View Ave. Lot 20, was charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and non-violent resistance after her arrest on Tuesday. She is being held in Lake County Jail on $4,000 bond. Her husband, Buddy Duke, 43, is being held without bail as a fugitive for failing to appear in court in New Mexico.

Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were investigating a death at a nearby residence when they determined Buddy Duke had an active New Mexico warrant for auto theft. Duke was taken into custody and taken to jail. Before he was taken away, Lorie Duke came and said the warrant was taken care of and he shouldn’t be arrested, according to the report from the sheriff’s office.

As they were wrapping up the death investigation, deputies learned that Lorie Duke also had a New Mexico warrant for grand theft auto. Before leaving, a deputy saw Lorie walking from a nearby yard. He asked her name and she refused to give it. The deputy knew who she was because she was with her husband when he was arrested, according to the report.

When told that she also had a warrant and had to put her hands behind her back, Lorie started screaming loudly for someone to help her. The deputy grabbed her by the arms and began to escort her to a building to use as support while handcuffing her. Lorie continually backed away from the deputy, continued to scream and reached for his trouser pockets, according to the report.

A neighbor heard screams and came to help Lorie, who was trying to empty her pockets but couldn’t because she was handcuffed. Once at the patrol car, the deputy took the items out of her pockets. In his left pocket were various banknotes, as well as a clear plastic bag containing crystals that tested positive for methamphetamine, according to the report.

Lorie Duke is scheduled to appear in Lake County Court on the drug charges on August 8.
