Minecraft: Java Edition Snapshot 21w43a introduces the world mix for “Caves and Cliffs Update”

Releasing alongside a new beta of Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, Mojang Studios is rolling out Minecraft: Java Edition 21w43a Snapshot to all interested PC gamers, which includes the typical improvements and bug fixes that we expect at the end of development for Update 1.18 Caves and Cliffs Part Two.

There is an interesting new development here, however, as Mojang is now introducing the world merge feature that was first discussed during Minecraft Live 2021. This innovative addition to Minecraft allows older worlds to be updated with new features. new updates, as Minecraft will now attempt to seamlessly transfer previously loaded songs into new songs that feature updated global build and functionality. The shuffling of the world can affect the old pieces as well, with new caves and underground features that can be added below.

Mojang is working on finalizing the second half of the Caves and Cliffs update, and it’s up to players to thoroughly test these snapshots and provide feedback to make it happen.

The full changelog for Minecraft: Java Edition Snapshot 21w43a includes:

Characteristics

  • The border between the old and the new generation of worlds is now adjusted when you upgrade a world

Mixture of the world

  • When generating pieces close to old pieces, the terrain is adjusted to better match the existing terrain at the boundaries
  • In the old chunks, if there is bedrock at y = 0, the column below will be filled with Deepslate
    • Worlds upgraded in this snapshot will have this deep slate at all times, so if you want new caves below height 0 later on, be sure to keep a save before upgrading.
  • The old bedrock between y = 0 and y = 4 in the old pieces is replaced by Deepslate
  • A new bedrock layer is placed at y = -64

Changes

  • The Priority Updates video setting has been renamed to Chunk Builder
  • Reduction in the number of flooded caves near river and ocean coasts
  • The water levels in aquifers change less often, so you will more often have larger areas with the same water level. This means a little less underground waterfalls and a slightly easier underground boat trip.
  • Lava aquifers are slightly less common
  • Restricted placement of Big Dripleaf to clay, grass, soil, farmland, moss, rooted soil, podzol, and mycelium

Technical updates

  • Some internal details of Block and Fluid ticking have been changed to improve save times. While it should behave exactly as before, maybe now is a good time to test your redstone gear (on a copy of a world or with a save, of course)
  • Chunk format has been updated
