What are SMP servers in Minecraft and how do I join them?

SMP servers in Minecraft are becoming more and more popular. This is mainly thanks to many YouTubers, such as the prominent Minecraft YouTuber Dream with its DreamSMP server.

For those unfamiliar with SMP servers in Minecraft, this article will cover all the essentials, including precisely what Minecraft SMP servers are, how they can be joined, and which are the best ones to join.

What are Minecraft SMP servers?

SMP stands for Survival Multiplayer. SMP servers allow players to enjoy a Minecraft survival world together as a community. On SMP servers, players can explore the world, mine resources, and form cities together.

SMP servers have very few plugins and are very similar to the vanilla survival of Minecraft. SMP servers are fun to play, with a strong sense of community.

SMP Minecraft servers have become extremely popular lately. This is mainly because they have been featured by many popular YouTubers, such as Dream with its top rated DreamSMP series.

How to join a Minecraft SMP server?

Most of the more popular Minecraft SMP servers seen on YouTube, such as DreamSMP, cannot be accessed. This is for obvious reasons, like stopping the sorrows and the raids.

There are, however, many popular public Minecraft SMP servers that any Minecraft player can join. These servers can be joined like any other Minecraft server.

Join a Minecraft SMP server

Follow these simple steps to join any Minecraft SMP server:

  1. Open Minecraft
  2. Open the Minecraft multiplayer menu
  3. Press the “Add a server” button
  4. Enter the name “SMP Server”
  5. Enter the server IP address: purpleore.com
  6. Press the “Done” button
  7. Join the server by double-clicking on the list

This Minecraft SMP server sits at the top of a dedicated list of SMP servers here. Many more can also be found if this one does not fit.

How to create your own Minecraft SMP server?

Creating a Minecraft SMP server is relatively straightforward and can be done in a few simple steps.

Step 1: Download the Minecraft server client

The first step in starting a Minecraft SMP server is to download the Minecraft server software from the Mojang website.

Also make sure the latest version of Java is installed, available here.

Step 2: Create a batch file to run the server

A simple file should now be created to run the Minecraft server. This can be done by following the steps below:

  1. Create a new folder with the Minecraft server jar file downloaded in step 1 inside
  2. Right click and create a new text file in this folder
  3. Name the new text file as “Run”
  4. Edit the text file and paste exactly this (replace the server filename, of course): java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar {server file name} nogui
  5. When saving the file, make sure to select the type “all files”
  6. Save the name of the file in “Run.bat”

Step 3: Accept the EULA

Players must agree to Mojang’s EULA for the server to start. To do this, open the eula.txt file and modify eula = false at eula = true

Step 3: Launch the server

The server can now be easily started by double clicking on the Run.bat file created in step 2.

If everything was done correctly, a window should appear, left open, or the server will shut down.

Step 4: Port forwarding (optional)

To allow other players who are not on the same Internet connection as you to join, port forwarding must be performed.

Port forwarding is slightly complex and may depend on the router used. However, a good video guide on how to do it can be found below:
