Zero Dawn VR Mod Revealed For PC

REAL VR mod developer Luke Ross is back with his latest project. This time it’s a Horizon: Zero Dawn VR mod.

Like in the PlayStation game, not on the Meta social platform.

Ross is releasing the mod to his Patreon followers today. It lets you play the PC version of Guerrilla Games’ flagship PlayStation series with a headset, while still using a gamepad to navigate the world. Ross’s work even includes an experimental first-person camera and the ability to remove Aloy’s character model so that there aren’t any orange hair swaying into the camera every few seconds.

Take a look at the gameplay from the start of the game below.

Horizon: Zero Dawn VR Gameplay Mod

We’ve been playing the mod for a few hours now. As always, this is an impressive conversion from Ross that, like most VR mods, isn’t perfect. We struggled to get performance at a consistently acceptable level (maximum of around 45 fps with a 3070 Ti card), and there are the weird moments you’d expect from playing a flat-screen game in the third person. in first person with VR.

That said, it’s interesting how the mod changes the Horizon experience. Hiding in tall grass, for example, obscures your view of enemies just as much as you hide from them, and it’s nice to be able to aim with your head rather than the sticks of the gamepad.

This is Ross’s seventh VR mod, featuring work on GTAV and Red Dead Redemption 2 as well as, more recently, the Mafia trilogy. Earlier this month, we reported that the modder is planning to release an upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 mod.

As for Horizon, I hope this is just a taste of what’s to come for the franchise and VR. With a PS5 VR headset in the works, hopefully we’ll see an official version of the franchise in the headsets sooner or later.
